[OOC] FAQ
Q. What type of game is
labyrinthrpg anyway?
A. There are no genre qualifiers in the community description for a reason. The intention behind Labyrinth is to give players a sandbox environment to develop their characters and have fun. Will there be horror elements? Sure, if players want them/create them. Is romance allowed? Of course! Can there be crack? Considering the Spirit's sense of humor, there will be plenty. But the bare bones of the premise are that of a mystery - which will be weaved and resolved through the game-wide plot - and only a mystery. Will the answer be something horrible/silly/lighthearted/unexpected? Well, that will depend entirely on how the game has developed and what players have made of it, by the time we reach the moment of revelations. Though your mod has her admittedly OCD moments about keeping on top of things and knowing what's going, she doesn't want to control what's going on. This is a sandbox. This is your sandbox, the moment you receive your acceptance email. Feel free to do with it as you will.
Q. Does that mean the game will end at some point?
Not necessarily. Given the core plot - which I will not be spoiling, sorry - the longevity of the game depends on the characters and players. Again, Labyrinth is a sandbox. It's here to provide a setting for shenanigans, and while there is a mystery for the characters to solve, solving said mystery won't necessarily take the sandbox away.
Q. Who is running this thing, anyway?
Currently your owner and sole mod, Fi, a.k.a.
faithlessness Who has entirely too much free time, prefers to run around backstage to pacify her occasional OCD spree of list-keeping and chronically typos "labyrinth" as "labrynth".
Q. Can a player start a game-wide plot?
Sure you can! Just throw the mod a line to sort out timing and make sure there's not too much going on at the same time, so it can get the spotlight. If you have ideas for puzzles, curses, events, etc, feel free to ping the Mod Inbox and they will be worked into the game itself.
Q. What exactly happens to my character, when they arrive to the game?
Aside being stripped from any superhuman abilities/losing a good chunk of their possessions, nothing much. They arrive wearing exactly what they were at the canonpoint they're taken from, and they aren't given extra clothes, so they'll have to bargain for them or spend what little gold they have on them. However, as mentioned in the Time section of the Setting, time will not affect them directly. What I mean is: characters can change and can feel and perceive the pass of time, but they will not age physically. A twelve year old will still be physically twelve years old, even after spending years in the Labyrinth. They can interact with things and be changed by them - for example being wounded or obtaining a potion to permanently cure an ailment - but Time itself seems to pool, rather than flow when it comes to the Labyrinth. Characters are essentially in stasis while they exist in the Labyrinth, but this is not ICly knowledge or even noticeable to most of them. It will become a plot-point later on.
Q. What if they're sick/terminally ill/require medication to survive?
The good news is that their illness will not kill them anymore. The bad news is that it isn't cured either. For example, character A has a condition in canon that demands him to take medicine X every day to survive. If he doesn't, he will suffer headaches, convulsions and ultimately die. In Labyrinth, character A wouldn't die, no matter how long he went without his medicine. However, he would still get the headaches and the convulsions, at the mun's discretion and depending when he last took his medicine in canon. The Potion Shops in the Village are capable of brewing remedies for anything, including pre-existing conditions in characters that arrive to the Labyrinth. However, obtaining the necessary ingredients will not be easy and the mission to get them must be mod-approved first.
Q. What if my character owns a living weapon/some of their stuff is alive/has a pet?
This one's tricky. If the companion/pet/weapon is appable on its own, characters will not find them in the Labyrinth. If the weapon/companion/pet is sentient but not enough to be a character on its own? Sure, you're welcome to find them in the Labyrinth and have shenanigans about it. The point is that pets/weapons/companions are not to be used as a work-around the character limit.
Q. What kind of item can my character find in the Labyrinth? What are the restrictions?
Any item your character possessed at the time they're pulled into the Labyrinth is fair game, even if it wasn't necessarily on their person at the moment. (For example, something they kept in their room or hideout, etc.) There aren't any size-restrictions regarding items, but bear in mind that if your character needs a special power to use/maneuver their items, it will not be available along with the item. For example, say Mary is super strong in her canon, and owns a giant mirror. She then finds said mirror in the labyrinth, but if she hasn't unlocked her super strength before this point, she will be unable to carry the mirror out of the Labyrinth and will need to either make a contract with the Spirit or ask another character with the right abilities to help her get it back. The only restriction on items is that they must belong to the character in question at the time they are pulled from canon.
Q. What if one of my character's abilities are necessary for them to survive/communicate/interact with others?
In the character abilities section of the app, please point it out clearly. On a case-by-case basis, your character will be allowed to keep said ability under a specific set of limits. For example, a mute character that communicates using telepathic abilities might be allowed to project their thoughts to others, but not to read other's minds. A shapeshifter whose true form is that of a blob of slime - or maybe isn't known in canon - will be stuck in the most humanoid form at their disposal, and will still be subject to all limiters about strength/speed/etc.
Q. Can I canon-update my character? What happens ICly if I do?
Yes, canon-updating is allowed, you just need to drop a line in the Drop/Hiatus/Canon Update post. When you canon update a character, they will be unexpectedly snatched away by
labyrinthsylph, with or without witnesses if so you want. After a few hours (a full RL day, not an IC day), your character will wake up once more in the Spirit's Temple, but the Spirit will not be there to welcome them. Of course, their memories of the Labyrinth will remain intact, but while they were back in their canon world, they will remember them as disjointed pieces of a dream. All their belongings will be waiting for them at their quarters, and all powers they had released will remain as well.
Q. What happens ICly when a character is dropped?
Their room and their belongings remain in the Manor, but will be eventually sealed off by the Spirit. The last anyone will know of them is that they were seen entering the Labyrinth but never coming back. Whether other characters assume them dead or lost or something else is up to the individual players.
Q. Can I app an alternate version of a character?
Yes! AUs are welcome, though there are two limits on this: one, there are two slots for any given character, one AU and one OU, and two, the AU cannot be too close to canon. Otherwise, just fill in the appropriate field in the app form.
Q. Are you ever going to accept OCs?
Unless the majority of the game voices a desire for it? I don't think so. I don't have anything against OCs and there's nothing wrong with them on principle. But they are an app nightmare in that they require more extensive apps and more time reviewing said apps. Maybe one day, if the playerbase wants it, I will figure out a better system for them.
Q. No, really. Who/What is
labyrinthsylph?
OOCly? That's the secondary Mod account and functions much the same way as
labyrinthspirit. It's also the journal where I'll be dumping plot-summaries so that everyone can keep tabs on what has been discovered and what's going on in the game in general. ICly? ...well, good luck finding out through play.
Q. I have a problem with something and can't find an answer anywhere!
Please leave a comment in the Mod Inbox and it will be addressed as soon as possible!
Q. You misspelled labyrinth.
T__T Tell me where and I will godelete evidence of my incompetence fix it.
